Como sits right on the southern bank of the Georges River, the first suburb you reach crossing into Sutherland Shire from Oatley. The suburb takes its name from Italy’s Lake Como and has built its whole identity around the water. The heritage-listed Como railway bridge, a lattice girder bridge opened in 1885 and one of the longest of its kind in the state, now carries walkers and cyclists across the river alongside the working rail bridge next to it. Como Pleasure Grounds, a park on a knoll above the river, has drawn picnickers since the late 1800s with its playground, barbecues, walking loop and views back over the river and bushland. Down on the water, Como Marina runs boat hire, moorings and a couple of waterside cafes that keep the foreshore busy on weekends, and the heritage-listed Como Hotel on Cremona Road, opposite Scylla Bay oval, has stood on the same spot since the 1880s.

Housing here runs from character homes on the tree-lined streets rising up off the water, to waterfront properties with their own jetties, newer apartments with river or park views, and larger family homes backing onto the bushland reserves that edge the suburb.
