Birrong sits hard against the Bankstown Line, with its own station running since 1928, strung on the rail corridor between Yagoona and Regents Park. It’s a working suburb as much as a residential one: the rail line and industrial land back onto much of the suburb, and Bankstown Airport is only a short drive away. The local shops are a small strip on Auburn Road, a bakery, a couple of cafes, a barber and an IGA with its own bottle shop and butcher, with anything bigger meaning a trip to Bankstown or Yagoona.

Housing is mostly modest post-war brick and fibro cottages on tight blocks, packed into just over a square kilometre, which is why Birrong is one of the more densely settled pockets in the area. Older homes are steadily giving way to townhouses and unit infill, so we see everything from a small garage clean-out to a full knock-down and rebuild on the same street. Birrong Public School, Birrong Girls High School and Birrong Boys High School sit within the suburb, and families here also make good use of the Birrong Leisure and Aquatic Centre and the sportsgrounds at Jim Ring Reserve (Birrong Park), home to Birrong Sports FC, for weekend soccer and rugby league.
