Prospect is a small, quiet suburb, and a lot of its land is taken up by Prospect Reservoir, the first earth-fill embankment dam built in Australia and still part of Sydney’s drinking water supply. It sits inside Prospect Nature Reserve, which covers a big share of the suburb. The suburb takes its own name from Prospect Hill, the dolerite outcrop nearby that was quarried for roadstone until 2007.

Prospect was first settled in 1791, making it one of the older suburbs in Sydney, and that history still shows on the ground. Reservoir Road carries the heritage-listed Royal Cricketers Arms Inn, a roadside hotel dating back to 1877, and the heritage St Bartholomew’s Anglican Church isn’t far away. Housing around these older streets is mostly established homes on generous blocks rather than new estates, with plenty of gardens, sheds and older kitchens and bathrooms due for a refresh.

For green space beyond the reservoir, Nurragingy Reserve is a short drive away in Doonside, with picnic areas, walking paths and a native wildlife park that local families use on weekends. Prospect sits across a council boundary, part of the suburb falls under Blacktown City Council and part falls under Cumberland Council. Tell us your address at booking and we’ll confirm the right council and point you at the correct form.

Most of what comes out of a Prospect job goes straight in: general household rubbish, garden waste from the suburb’s bigger established blocks, and renovation waste from a kitchen or bathroom refresh in one of the older homes near Reservoir Road. Asbestos, which does turn up in some of Prospect’s older sheds and homes, can’t go in the bin, and neither can paint, chemicals, batteries or tyres. Kitchen and bathroom renovations on Prospect’s older homes mostly run 3-4m³, and a garden clean-up on one of the suburb’s bigger, established blocks often lands in the same range.
