Wattle Grove was built on former Defence land next to the Holsworthy army base, first planned back in the Whitlam years and finally developed by Delfin Property Group with the Defence Housing Authority. Bob Hawke opened the suburb in April 1991, and it became its own suburb the following year, roughly a third service housing and the rest private homes from the start. That history still shows in the layout, a proper master-planned estate with Wattle Grove Lake and Lakeside Park at its centre, plus Wattle Grove Park and Australis Park for the sporting fields and open space locals use every weekend.

Everyday errands run through the Wattle Grove Shopping Village at the corner of Australis Avenue and Village Way, with its Coles, hairdresser and pizzeria covering the basics before residents head into Liverpool for anything bigger. The side streets and courts, places like Tusculum Court, Village Way and Woodlake Court, are lined with the brick veneer family homes that went up through the 1990s and 2000s, now old enough that kitchens, bathrooms and gardens are due for an update.
